You guys, I am like, addicted to maple syrup. I eat foods like pancakes and waffles just so that I can have it. Sometimes, when no one is looking, I do shots of it straight out of the bottle. I went to a maple syrup festival once and OH MY GOD IT WAS LIKE EVERYTHING THAT’S BEAUTIFUL AND GOOD IN THE WORLD, ALL IN ONE PLACE. Sorry, I still get pretty excited thinking about it. They put syrup on everything, from pancakes to apples to pickles (!), and they did that thing where they pour the syrup into the snow and then wrap it around a stick to make maple syrup taffy. It was, in a word, heaven. I ate about a thousand of those yummy maple sugar candies, and let me tell you, there’s really nothing quite like a maple sugar high. It’s really pure and dreamy, but insanely energetic at the same time. Mainly I just felt overtaken by a rather delirious sense of optimism. And for a day or two afterwards, ‘til I washed it, my hair still smelled like sweet, beautiful maple.
So, you can imagine my utter delight when I learned that there is a winery in Haliburton, Ontario that makes maple sugar wine. Yes! The intrepid geniuses at Moon Shadows Estate Winery have taken two of the things I love most in the world and put them together, and the result is nothing short of AMAZING. They also make all sorts of other delectable wines, including ‘Wild Blueberry’, ‘Golden Plum’ and ‘Strawberry Rhubarb’. Naturally I had to sample them all (in the name of research) and I am happy to report that they are all delicious.
